Sukanya Rocoto
Species: Capsicum pubescens | Origin: Australia | Pungency: Medium
Sukanya Rocoto is a variety from Australia and is famed for its nearly all-white flowers, a trait shared with another Capsicum pubescens variety from the Canary Islands known as San Isidro Rocoto. However, neither variety produces all-white flowers. Traces of purple can still be seen on the flowers of both varieties, but the flowers of Sukanya Rocoto have much less purpling on them than those of San Isidro Rocoto.
The plants have a compact growth habit and produce average yields of thick-walled, juicy peppers which start green and ripen to pale orange, borderline yellow. The blocky-shaped peppers can range in size from that of a small apple to that of a good-sized bell pepper. The seeds inside fully ripe fruits stay brown and do not turn black as one would typically expect from a C. pubescens variety. This seems to be a trait of all C. pubescens varieties which produce pale flowers because the seeds inside a fully ripe San Isidro Rocoto don't turn completely black either. The peppers are of medium heat and the plant didn't perform very well outdoors here in North Wales. This variety would be better suited to being grown under cover in the UK, and although it is typically referred to as Sukanya Rocoto the shape and pungency of the peppers more closely resemble Manzano peppers than they do Rocoto peppers.
Sukanya Rocoto peppers are great for spicing up many types of food, such as stews, soups, salsas, sauces, stir fries, rice dishes, pasta dishes and casseroles. This variety makes a great choice for stuffing due to the size and shape of the peppers.
