Chilli Plant Update - 29th May 2021
Things are coming along nicely here and everything is where it should be for the time of year. It was starting to get very busy in the porch, so on Tuesday afternoon I re-potted all but four of the plants into their final pots and moved them into position for the growing season. I have three Bell Pepper plants and one Chiltepin plant still in their second pots and these will be re-potted into their final pots and moved into position in a few more weeks. They're still a bit small at present.
This next photo shows the root system on the Fatalii plant. As you can see it was in dire need of some new shoes. It's been a few years since I last grew this variety (assuming it's true to type). This is a favourite variety for many chilli-heads and it's not very difficult to figure out why!
The Capsicum baccatum varieties and two of the three Aji Largo plants are now living in the walk-in plastic greenhouse and spent their first night outside on Tuesday. In a few more weeks once they've done some more growing both of the Aji Largo plants will be moved outside, where they'll spend the remainder of the growing season. I want them to get acclimatised first.
Here are some photos that were taken three days ago showing a few of the individual varieties, plus one shot showing all of the newcomers to this year's tribe. I have two Aji Lemon plants but only one is shown below. My seed stock for this variety is running low so I'm growing one plant indoors in a small pot because I find it easier to isolate flowers this way.
The weather in May wasn't great and for most days we had rain, rain and more rain. However, things look set to brighten up now and the weather forecast for next week is looking quite promising, but we'll see. Hopefully, they're right because the chilli plants wouldn't say no to a good blast of sun.
We've now reached the best part of the growing season, where we get to sit back and watch the plants perform their magic. In the meantime, let's hope that Chaac takes a back seat for a few weeks so that we get to see a bit of sun. All hail the Chilli Gods. 👽
