Chilli Plant Update - 9th July 2018

Yesterday afternoon I took some photos of the chilli plants because I think it's about time for an update. It's been a while since the last one and the idea of updating the blog in June hadn't even occurred to me. Due to the heatwave we're currently experiencing in the UK right now the entire chilli plant tribe has needed watering every day, approximately 10-litres per day, which I'm sure Welsh Water are very happy about! It's like being a bartender at an all-inclusive holiday resort.

Two weeks yesterday I re-potted both Red Mayan Habanero plants into 12-litre pots and both Chocolate Habanero plants into 10-litre pots. While I was at it I also re-potted Mini Rocoto Brown and one of the Yellow Jelly Bean Habanero plants from 5-litre pots into 7-litre pots. In order to make room for the changes I moved both Dorset Naga plants outside into the garden.

I don't mind superhot varieties but they're not my chillies of choice for every day cooking. I much prefer Scotch Bonnet and Habanero types, and they always take pride of place here. Both Dorset Naga plants are doing fine outside and have even started setting fruit.

The Aji Charapita plants are growing in the same spot as last year's plants and both are doing really well, although I think it may be getting a little too hot for them on the windowsill at the moment.

The Chocolate Habanero plants haven't grown much since being re-potted, and this is because they're putting all their energy into developing larger root systems, now that they have fresh compost and larger shoes.

Both the Inca Berry plants have grown quite large and set a lot of fruit. I did take some photos of the plants but sadly none of them turned out very well, so these next two will have to do.

I was impressed with last year's Malawi Bird's Eye chillies and found them good for spicing up curries and dals, so this year I'm growing three plants in 5-litre pots and all three are doing really well and have set lots of fruit.

Mini Rocoto Brown is the first Capsicum pubescens variety I've known to set fruit indoors. All the others I've grown needed to be moved outside to a semi-shaded spot due to flower drop. This plant seems very happy in the window and has so far only dropped one flower. If the peppers taste good then this variety will definitely be a keeper.

The Red Mayan Habanero plants are looking great as usual and it will be interesting to see how well they do now that they're in 12-litre pots. The largest pot size I've ever grown this variety in before now is 7-litres.

The Yellow Jelly Bean Habanero plants are coming along nicely and have already set a nice amount of chillies. The plant on the right has always been a lot smaller than its counterpart on the left.

I'll wrap this post up with a group shot of the porch plants that was taken yesterday evening. The two on the left are Chocolate Habanero, the two in the centre are Malawi Bird's Eye and the two on the right are Red Mayan Habanero.

The Habanero porch plants are currently in the process of building larger root systems into the fresh compost, and in the next update you should hopefully see a significant amount of new growth. All hail the Chilli Gods.
